Position Summary
The position is responsible for providing a high standard of evidence-based peri-operative nursing care to individuals / patients of varying ages and cultural groups within the peri-operative unit.
The Peri Operative Registered Nurse will adhere to Australian College of Operating Room Nurses (ACORN) standards and plan, assess, implement and evaluate the operative nursing care of the patient. This will be undertaken in collaboration with surgeon, anaesthetist and other members of the theatre team to ensure patient safety and the accessibility of identified equipment / consumables predicted to be required to successfully complete the procedure.
The RN will adhere to policies and procedures, contribute to the efficient, effective, and economic running of the peri operative service, participate in working parties or committees (as required), demonstrate a commitment to Continuous Quality Improvement, Occupational Health and Safety, achievement of hospital / facility accreditation and deliver a high standard of Customer service at all times.
The RN will maintain a professional development portfolio with a commitment to ongoing learning and development.
Qualifications – Mandatory
· Registered with the Nurses Board relevant to the state of employment
· Current practicing certificate
Qualifications – Desirable
· Certificate of Training as a Registered Nurse
· Post graduate qualifications in Peri-Operative Nursing
· Bachelor of Science (Nursing)
· Post graduate qualification in relevant field of specialty
· 12 months experience in an accredited post-graduate nursing program

· Provide supervision and guidance to Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses, Graduates and Students
· Question and /or clarify nursing interventions that appear inappropriate with the surgeon and or anaesthetist.
· Ensure that when patients are ready to leave the peri operative suite that appropriate medical orders / postoperative instructions are in place for ward staff for the ongoing management of the patient.
· The CNS works collaboratively with the surgeon and anaesthetist
· Undertake nursing interventions founded on evidence –based practice
· Provide teaching, guidance and support to junior staff and undertakes precetorship and mentoring roles
· Participate in case reviews and clinical audits
· Participate in research
· Proactively assess the operative nursing care provided to ensure the best possible outcome is achieved for the individual / patient
· Demonstrate awareness of cost containment by utilizing resources efficiently and maintaining key performance indicator targets (KPIs)
· Act as an advocate for the patient
· Ensure patient confidentiality and privacy is maintained
· Manage rapidly changing or unpredictable situations effectively
· Provide ‘hands-on’ peri-operative nursing care
· Undertake the roles of scrub nurse, scout nurse, anaesthetic nurse, recovery room nurse as clinically competent
· Perform interventions based on evidence-based practice
· Undertake assessments using a range of assessment tools (e.g. observation, physical examination)
· Plan nursing care based on assessment findings and directions from surgeon / anaesthetist, identify priorities and evaluate against established goals. Redirect plan as required
· Document into the patient’s medical record objectively, clearly, concisely and timely using accepted abbreviations and terminology
· Identify goals that are measurable, achievable and congruent with the values and beliefs of the individual / patient
· Ensure patients meet recovery room discharge criteria prior to being released back to the ward / day procedure unit
· Ensure post procedure care instructions are provided by the surgeon for ongoing patient care management
· Respond effectively to emergency situations and the changing status of the individual / patient
· Delegate aspects of care to ENs according to their skill level and competence
· Ensure patient confidentiality and privacy is maintained
· Promote teamwork
· Act as a resource person for those staff less experienced
· Maintain and promote good interpersonal, public relations and customer service
· Attend and participate in unit meetings, working parties and committees
· Take ownership and identify solutions to address the needs of the individual / patient
· Work efficiently, ensuring time management skills are effective in delivering timely nursing care
· Provide clear, informative and objective handover to oncoming nursing staff at completion of patient procedure
· Support the hospital / facility’s commitment to quality improvement and achievement of accreditation by
· Participating in department meetings, committees, audits
· Participating in the development, implementation and evaluation of the unit quality plan
· Identifying areas of improvement, discussing with peers and seek avenues to address
· Take ownership of a quality project
· Assist in the documenting and reviewing relevant policies, procedures and the unit/ward manual
· Discuss opportunities for service expansion with the Nurse Unit Manager
