{"id":1039,"date":"2021-07-10T18:01:01","date_gmt":"2021-07-10T17:01:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.recruitireland.com\/advice-centre\/?p=1039"},"modified":"2023-04-14T17:34:15","modified_gmt":"2023-04-14T16:34:15","slug":"early-exposure-key-to-attracting-more-women-into-tech-roles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.recruitireland.com\/advice-centre\/early-exposure-key-to-attracting-more-women-into-tech-roles\/","title":{"rendered":"Early exposure key to attracting more women into tech roles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More women and more diversity are needed in STEM to inspire future generations to see their own future in tech roles, according to the Women Tech Network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recruit Ireland spoke with Cork woman and UCC graduate, Suzanne Rice on the importance of women in tech roles as well as what needs to be done for its growth. Suzanne is a Global Business Operations Leader with Facebook and was also named &#8216;Woman of Influence&#8217; by Silicon Valley Business Journal.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1040\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1040\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1040\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.recruitireland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/BadassWomenPhotosSuzanneRIce2020-4-2-400x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1040\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suzanne Rice- Global Business Operations Leader with Facebook.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Education<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Suzanne, early exposure within the educational system is key for the growth of female roles within the tech industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe exposure of girls in early education to tech is critically important,\u201d she said. \u201cAs we see that increasing we\u2019ll see an increase in women entering tech. But that exposure, studies have shown, has to be between the ages of eight and twelve. If you don\u2019t get girls interested in technology at that point you tend to lose them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From that early education point onto university, allowing the broad spectrum of technical-based classes to be taken and an option for a combination is essential.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVery often we see someone who is not interested in sciences, so they go down the non-tech path. We take all students and we segregate them into two different paths and that\u2019s something we need to change and continue to provide entry points into tech.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Employment\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs companies hire, they need to ensure they have the broadest slate of applicants possible. Hiring managers can sometimes get hung up on the idea of wanting to hire someone who has an engineering degree for a specific job. What we don\u2019t tend to think about is that there are probably other people that could do the job that don\u2019t have that specific education basis, how do we give them that opportunity?\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suzanne says that systematically this has to be fixed, which can be done if children are exposed to such STEM subjects at an early age, through to university, right through to employment where technology can be incorporated into someone\u2019s working life. \u201cAt each point or each juncture through this life cycle there are points at which you can adjust it and look at it from a different lens, that will actually make it better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Is our education system equipped for promoting females to tech roles<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of her daughter, Suzanne is grateful that in California she was exposed to tech subjects even though she was a \u201cnon-tech\u201d kid. \u201cComing through the education system here she got that exposure.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using an example of promoting STEM amongst young people she spoke about GLAM, Girls Leadership Academy Meetup. Suzanne works with girls ages 8-12 who have their own startups. \u201cExposure- that\u2019s how we\u2019re going to change it, that\u2019s how we\u2019re going to make it different, by just changing our mindset. If we\u2019re not consciously doing that, it\u2019s going to be tough to catch up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The importance of females in tech roles<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need to have a balanced view in these companies and this comes from the number of female employees, all the way through to who\u2019s on the board and making sure that we have equal representation,\u201d said Suzanne.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent laws have been passed in California to say that fifty percent of board members have to be female. \u201c\u201cIt takes legislation to actually drive female representation on boards.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with legislative support, corporate support is needed too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEven if the government is not telling us to, we should be watching the number of the gender split within our companies, looking at \u2018early in career\u2019 people, what\u2019s happening when they come into the workforce, how they\u2019re evolving, what path they\u2019re taking, and so forth.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Suzanne, it\u2019s a numbers game: \u201cIf we don\u2019t understand the numbers, then it&#8217;s going to be incredibly difficult to manage.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt the end of the day it doesn\u2019t matter what type of diversity it is, all diversity is incredibly important and that\u2019s what makes companies and society successful.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to Facebook&#8217;s Global Business Operations Leader, early exposure within the educational system is key for the growth of female roles within the tech industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":37,"featured_media":4068,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[27],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1039","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-careers","entry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
