It\u2019s not as serious as it sounds once it&#8217;s detected early.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burnout can leave people feeling exhausted or, more seriously, it can leave a person unable to deal with daily life demands, hence the importance of knowing what the early signs of burnout are and what can be done to relieve it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of people wear their burnout as a badge of honour. Remember, however, with the absence of sleep, a good diet, relaxation, and time with family or friends (even if it is temporarily virtual) you\u2019re not going to make for a productive team member.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the signs of burnout?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe way I explain burnout is mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion brought on by emotionally demanding situations,\u201d says<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siobh\u00e1n Murray, motivational speaker, global thought leader on burnout, and bestselling author of \u2018The Burnout Solution\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotional signs\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She explains how a prolonged feeling of the following can be signs of burnout:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disengagement in work\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not feeling valued\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not contributing to work<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling short-tempered with colleagues or with yourself<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling teary or angry at your workload<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losing sleep<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Struggling to switch off<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constantly feeling anxious or worried<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catastrophising everything that\u2019s going on<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical signs<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also physical signs of burnout too. When your body is stressed, it\u2019s like one big muscle that\u2019s clenched. Here are some of the physical manifestations of burnout:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Aches and pains<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digestive issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pains in your chest\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What can we do to stop burnout?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siobh\u00e1n <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says that up until last March we paid lip service to our own wellness, such as going to the gym and connecting with others, however, one of the things we were really guilty of is \u2018runaway recovery\u2019 or \u2018runaway prevention\u2019 &#8211; \u201cwhere we work really hard but just keep going on the treadmill because I\u2019m going on my holidays, I\u2019m going to run away,\u201d\u00a0 she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But let\u2019s not forget that going on holiday can be stressful, as Siobh\u00e1n reminds us. Between getting work cover, doing extra work before you leave, packing, the list goes on. Then we go on holidays and most might get sick with usually a cold while they\u2019re away and then come home and become equally stressed unpacking and catching up with work &#8211; the vicious cycle continues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis process wasn\u2019t a great one but we did it anyway and we convinced ourselves that that\u2019s how we recharged. What the last twelve months have taught us is we need to have rituals of recovery. If we don\u2019t have these rituals of prevention whether they&#8217;re small daily ones or bigger weekly ones, when offices open and we begin to back to normal we risk falling back into the trap of not minding ourselves. We\u2019re going to equally be as burnt out as we\u2019ve ever been before,\u201d Siobhan said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are ways we can incorporate rituals of prevention into our daily lives. Siobh\u00e1n emphasises the importance of improving our already existing rituals of prevention rather than having to add extra tasks to the already long \u2018to do\u2019 lists.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Sleep more and regularly\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAddressing sleep first is the most important thing,\u201d said Siobh\u00e1n. \u201cWithout positive healthy sleep we\u2019re going to eat worse, possibly become more alcohol-dependent and our cognitive reasoning is out the window.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Learn productivity hacks<\/h3>\n<p>Make sure you work smarter, not harder. Try to research some productivity hacks so you can <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.recruitireland.com\/5-tips-for-getting-more-work-done-in-less-time\/\">get more work done in less time<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h3><b>Don&#8217;t use your phone right away when you wake up\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siobh\u00e1n told Recruit Ireland that she uses a Lumi light instead of her phone as an alarm clock, \u201cWhen we use the phone as an alarm clock it\u2019s like someone hitting us over the head with an iron bar. It jolts us into being awake which activates our stress hormone that can stay with you for the rest of the day,\u201d she said.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Practice mindfulness<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you enjoy baking, cooking, or reading, Siobh\u00e1n confirms that these are all acts of mindfulness because during these activities you are present in the here and now, and that\u2019s the core ethos of mindfulness. Making small adjustments or improvements to our daily lives can help with how we manage stress, \u201cfind those habit changes rather than giving yourself more to do,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Exercise intelligently<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTrying to do a HITT class in seven minutes isn\u2019t smart if you\u2019re exhausted,\u201d Siobh\u00e1n said. \u201cSmart exercise is about listening to your body,\u201d she continued. If you\u2019re exhausted instead of doing an intense workout, Siobh\u00e1n advises to go for a walk instead where you\u2019re not timing yourself or setting a distance, you\u2019re simply going outside for fresh air.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Assess your situation\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Perhaps you also need to meditate and think hard about your current employment and your happiness there.
