Healthcare giant Merck is planning a major \u20ac440 million investment to expand its Cork-based manufacturing facilities, which will create more than 370 new jobs.<\/p>\n

The announcement, one of the most significant in the sector in recent years, is seen as a major vote of confidence in the Irish economy.<\/p>\n

Merck said it plans to expand its membrane and filtration manufacturing capabilities in Ireland.<\/p>\n

The investment will increase capacity at its current Carrigtwohill site and finance the construction of a new facility at Blarney Business Park, both in Cork.<\/p>\n

The investment, which is the largest in a single site ever for a life science business in the Republic, will create more than 370 permanent jobs by the end of 2027, it said.<\/p>\n

With the more than \u20ac290 million expansion in Carrigtwohill, the company is adding a manufacturing facility for the immersion casting of membranes. \u201cThese membranes support novel and gene therapies, as well as applications like virus sterilisation, plasma separation and finger-prick rapid testing,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n

Merck will also invest \u20ac150 million in a new new filtration manufacturing facility at Blarney Business Park. \u201cOnce fully operational, it will increase Merck\u2019s global manufacturing capacity and supply customers producing both traditional and novel treatments and therapeutics,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

Merck said it aims to increase group sales to about \u20ac25 billion by 2025. To achieve this growth target, the company has increased its planned investment between 2021 and 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s announcement of the decision to construct a new membrane manufacturing facility in Carrigtwohill and the development of a new filtration manufacturing facility in Blarney is a testament to the capability, hard work and dedication of all our colleagues here in Cork,\u201d Martin McAuliffe, managing director and head of Cork operations at Merck, said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeyond that, it is a statement of Merck\u2019s commitment to our Irish operations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin welcomed what he described as a \u201c very significant announcement from Merck, which underlines the company\u2019s commitment to doing business in Ireland\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis investment, the largest in the history of Merck Life Science, speaks volumes about our capacity to provide the right conditions for multinational organisations to grow their operations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
