Is it still offensive? Of course, it is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is it?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the American Society of Microbiology, a whopping 7 out of 10<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people, experience imposter syndrome (known also as impostorism or the imposter phenomenon) which is a faulty belief system where one chronically doubts his or her abilities in spite of competing for external evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_257\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-257\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-257\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.recruitireland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/The-Imposter-Syndrome-1-600x323.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"323\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-257\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: gailgazelle.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>You\u2019re not alone<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initially thought to be just experienced by women, studies have shown that this in fact isn\u2019t the case. While some also might think it\u2019s experienced by people who don\u2019t come from a highly esteemed academic background, this is also in fact incorrect, it\u2019s common for it to be linked with perfectionism and internally believing that you are not as competent in the way others believe you to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even Albert Einstein seemed to hint at being impacted by imposter syndrome when he once said: \u201cThe exaggerated esteem in which my lifework is held makes me very ill at ease. I feel compelled to think of myself as an involuntary swindler.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Albert isn\u2019t the only one to have felt this. Celebrities that you never thought would have a lack of confidence can also be subject to imposter syndrome.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even award-winning actor Tom Hanks has felt it. In an interview with NPR, he explained that he felt particularly connected to his character in \u2018A Hologram For the King\u2019 because he too has experienced self-doubt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hanks said: \u201cNo matter what we&#8217;ve done, there comes a point where you think, &#8216;How did I get here? When are they going to discover that I am, in fact, a fraud and take everything away from me?&#8217;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Lady GaGa\u2019s HBO special, she said: \u201cI still sometimes feel like a loser kid in high school and I just have to pick myself up and tell myself that I&#8217;m a superstar every morning so that I can get through this day and be for my fans what they need for me to be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Characteristics of imposter syndrome<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overthinking everything<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very sensitive towards even constructive criticism<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Setting unrealistic challenges and feeling like a failure when you fall short<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not being able to adequately assess your skills and competence<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-doubt<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear of failure or that you won\u2019t live up to expectations<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How to fix it<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whilst doubtful thoughts about ourselves can emerge at different times we can help ourselves out of these thoughts when they do occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recruit Ireland spoke to an accredited psychotherapist, certified life coach, experienced public speaker, trainer, and best-selling author, Siobh\u00e1n Murray.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said: \u201cThe feelings of imposter syndrome can be managed through simple steps. The first is being able to identify that it\u2019s causing a problem for you. This can be the hardest step,\u00a0 but once you\u2019ve acknowledged this you can then begin to implement what I call TLC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAsk yourself if your thought True, Logical, and Constructive. Using this process allows the skill set to quieten your inner critic in an organised way rather than jumping straight to feelings of imposter syndrome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Imposter Syndrome can leave us feeling
