That is the finding of a new survey carried out by financial advisers State Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">The rising\u00a0cost of living\u00a0in recent years has dented Irish workers\u2019 optimism and confidence about retirement, with almost half saying their retirement outlook changed recently, up from 29 per cent a year previously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">More than half (52 per cent) said they would need to have annual pension income of between \u20ac30,000-\u20ac50,000 to maintain a reasonable standard of living. At the bottom end of that range, and allowing for the fact that a State pension would contribute about \u20ac14,420 of the amount required, a person would need a retirement fund of about \u20ac500,000 to make up the balance. Another three-in-10 people targeted an even higher income.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">The savings required for income in retirement of \u20ac50,000 per year would be closer to \u20ac1 million.<\/p>\n<div id=\"fusion-app\" class=\"layout-section\">\n<section id=\"main\" class=\"main\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"main\">\n<div class=\"container layout-section\">\n<div class=\"row advanced-grid\">\n<section class=\"col-sm-md-12 col-lg-xl-8 advanced-grid-desktop-main-area\">\n<div class=\"advanced-grid-2 layout-section\">\n<article class=\"default__ArticleBody-sc-1nhbny4-2 kWWtWa article-body-wrapper article-sub-wrapper\">\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">Figures from surveys by Irish brokers suggest that the average Irish pension fund is much closer to \u20ac110,000 at the moment, meaning retirement income is going to come in sharply lower than what respondents consider they need \u2013 under \u20ac20,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">There were 600 people in the State who were among 4,200 questioned for the international survey. The other respondents came from\u00a0Canada,\u00a0Australia, the\u00a0UK\u00a0and the\u00a0United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">Close to half said they were either not optimistic at all, or only slightly optimistic that they will be financially prepared for retirement when the time arrives.
