{"id":8661,"date":"2024-06-20T08:00:41","date_gmt":"2024-06-20T07:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.recruitireland.com\/advice-centre\/?p=8661"},"modified":"2024-06-18T14:24:29","modified_gmt":"2024-06-18T13:24:29","slug":"women-more-exposed-to-jobs-impact-of-ai-research-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.recruitireland.com\/advice-centre\/women-more-exposed-to-jobs-impact-of-ai-research-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"Women more exposed to jobs impact of AI, research finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph\">Women in the Republic are expected to be more exposed to the impact of\u00a0artificial intelligence\u00a0(AI) on jobs due to the over-representation of men in roles and industries considered less likely to be affected by the technology\u2019s adoption, analysis by two Government departments suggests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">The research, part of a series of three papers by the\u00a0Department of Finance\u00a0and the\u00a0Department of Enterprise\u00a0published on Tuesday, is the Government\u2019s first attempt to assess the benefits and potential economic pitfalls of the rapidly evolving technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">While the timeline for AI adoption and its integration within production processes remains uncertain, the research suggests that one-third of the workforce here are currently working in roles considered \u201chighly exposed\u201d to AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">Where historic advances in automation technologies were focused on replacing repetitive manual tasks, the research assumes AI tools will eventually be able to replace certain \u201ccognitive\u201d skills.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">About 33 per cent of workers \u2013 including those in the legal profession, medicine, librarians and others \u2013 are considered to be working in highly exposed industries where AI could complement their existing roles, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">However, some 30 per cent \u2013 including accountants, communication operators, administrators and secretarial workers among others \u2013 are working in areas with \u201cweak complementarity\u201d, where AI could eventually replace jobs.<\/p>\n<div id=\"arcad-feature-f0fA5zOjVt7q5My-3-4-3-a1bc7bcbbb4e3\" class=\"default__StyledAdUnit-sc-1moicrg-0 lhWBCq arcad-feature flex breakout\">\n<div class=\"arcad-container width_100\">\n<div id=\"arcad_f0fA5zOjVt7q5My-3-4-3-a1bc7bcbbb4e3\" class=\"arcad ad-550x250 flex flex_justify_center\" data-google-query-id=\"CK26sqv25IYDFXdAFQgdhyALHQ\">\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">Women are slightly more exposed to this impact, according to the research, largely because men are over-represented in industries like construction and agriculture where the jobs impact is likely to be weaker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">The research, based on figures from 2021 before the rise of generative AI models like\u00a0ChatGPT, stresses that there are a number of important questions around the economic impact of AI, including whether most of the technology\u2019s benefits will accrue to workers or to capital, and whether it will raise productivity and living standards or produce unemployment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">These are open questions, departmental officials stressed, and more research is required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">Speaking to reporters at Government Buildings on Tuesday afternoon, Minister for Finance\u00a0Michael McGrath\u00a0said the reports are \u201can assessment at a point in time\u201d. While they do not take account of recent developments in generative AI, the \u201cprinciples that are clearly set out in these reports remain the same and equally apply\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">\u201cI do think that the pace of change is accelerating all the time. Both the opportunities and the risks that are set out in this report, I think have been amplified even since the data which we were relying on was in existence. Certainly it is the case that there is a risk to certain parts of the labour market,\u201d Mr McGrath said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">Minister for Enterprise\u00a0Peter Burke\u00a0said \u201cAI is here to stay\u201d and the Government needs to regulate it accordingly. \u201cBut we also have to ensure we get innovative opportunities out of AI and that\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do, which is a fine balancing act,\u201d Mr Burke said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">Published last summer, a progress report from the Government\u2019s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy stated the ongoing evolution of AI would likely lead to \u201cmany unpredictable challenges\u201d for government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1nhbny4-0 gVsmvl body-paragraph paywall\">The latest research also points to potential policy conflicts between AI adoption and other policy goals including those around climate action and the stability of the financial sector.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Women in the Republic are expected to be more exposed to the impact of\u00a0artificial intelligence\u00a0(AI) on jobs due to the over-representation of men in roles and industries considered less likely to be affected by the technology\u2019s adoption, analysis by two Government departments suggests.
