{"id":9046,"date":"2024-11-22T12:01:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-22T12:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.recruitireland.com\/advice-centre\/?p=9046"},"modified":"2024-11-22T12:01:00","modified_gmt":"2024-11-22T12:01:00","slug":"majority-of-professionals-struggle-to-switch-off-from-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.recruitireland.com\/advice-centre\/majority-of-professionals-struggle-to-switch-off-from-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Majority of professionals struggle to switch-off from work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">Nearly 60% of Irish professionals find it difficult to switch off from work, with many citing pressure from employers to be always available, research from recruitment firm Robert Walters shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">According to the research, 59% of Irish professionals find it difficult to \u2018switch off\u2019 from work, with 27% reporting that they have lost sleep over work-related messages or tasks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-paywall-IE-template\">\n<p class=\"\">A quarter of those surveyed have said they have an inability to relax or reset.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Robert Walters country manager Suzanne Feeney said people not being able to switch off from work can \u201cresult in a variety of negative side effects for professionals\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cExcessive workloads, difficult deadlines, and constant monitoring from managers can prevent professionals from being able to fully switch off from work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;This could quickly lead to them grappling with diminished concentration and motivation \u2014 even resulting in declining levels of productivity and engagement,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">One of the main triggers for not being able to switch off is the expectation that professionals must be always available with 66% of people, across all professional services industries, stating that this pressure has increased over the past 12 months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Of those surveyed, 54% admit to checking-in on work-related emails or calls when not in the office and a further fifth said their employer \u2018frequently\u2019 contacts them outside of office hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ms Feeney said the increasing use of platforms such as Microsoft Teams or Slack has meant that teams can be more easily tracked and contacted by their managers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAn \u2018always online\u2019 workplace culture contributes to the blurring of lines between office hours and personal time as well as an increasingly unrealistic expectation for greater availability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;This is something that if left unchecked can rapidly lead to increased cases of burnout across workforces,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ms Feeney warned that employers are risking of creating a \u201czombie workforce\u201d which could put employee productivity and satisfaction levels \u201con the line\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThis could directly lead to a rise in cases of absenteeism throughout their organisation,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly 60% of Irish professionals find it difficult to switch off from work, with many citing pressure from employers to be always available, research from recruitment firm Robert Walters shows.
