An increasing number of people are swapping 9-5 jobs for being their own boss. Emer Harrington talks to three women working for themselves<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

Whenever I\u2019m asked what I do, I struggle to find a succinct way of saying I\u2019m a journalist, writer, communications consultant and yoga teacher.<\/p>\n

I used to think all my work had to fit under one heading, but now I embrace my “portfolio career”.<\/p>\n

\n

It might seem unconventional, but I\u2019m not alone in swapping the 9 to 5 for a more flexible and varied approach. But why are so many people choosing portfolio careers?<\/p>\n

Career consultant Lynda Barry says portfolio careers have become popular with people who want to use a wide range of skills.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople have realised that they have multiple variations of skills and knowledge, and also their interests have expanded,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

This variety and autonomy appeals to Aoife Barry, who is a journalist, writer, moderator and broadcaster. She released her first book, Social Capital, in 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can play to my strengths and do work that I am good at,\u201d says Aoife.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love being my own boss as I don\u2019t have to ask anyone for permission – I\u2019m free to do whatever work takes my interest and take time off when I need it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In March 2023, Aoife left The Journal after 12 years. Changes on a global and personal level made her realise it was time to move on.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d found the covid era very intense \u2013 there was absolutely no \u2018break\u2019 for news journalists globally,\u201d explains Aoife.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter experiencing two family bereavements in a very short space of time in 2022 I had a new outlook on my life \u2013 I knew it was time to leave hard news and work for myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

In some industries, rates of pay mean it\u2019s not realistic to have just one role.<\/p>\n

\u201cFreelance journalism rates have barely changed since I was last freelance in 2010, which is a big part of why I have a portfolio career,\u201d says Aoife.<\/p>\n

Although it was a big transition, Aoife never looked back.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Journal had been an amazing place to work and learn, so I was very lucky to immediately start picking up freelance work,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was absolutely terrifying to take the step, but I don\u2019t regret it for a second.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aoife is not alone in building a foundation for freelancing before taking the leap into a portfolio career.<\/p>\n

MORE CREATIVITY<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fionnuala Jones is a content creator, TV presenter and host of the Flop Culture podcast.<\/p>\n

She had been freelancing alongside her full time media job, and was struggling to fit it all in. Two years ago, she went fully freelance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like it allows for more creativity in terms of how you can schedule your time and structure your day, and to take on more opportunities,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Having a variety of income streams means Fionnuala isn\u2019t overly reliant on one area of work.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf one thing is quiet one month, I might pick up other things, so I\u2019m not freaking out about money, even if something is deadly quiet,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n

Some portfolio careers happen more gradually. Niamh Hegarty is the owner of BKultured Water Kefir. She also works in her family business, Hegarty Properties in Midleton, and is a yoga teacher.<\/p>\n

While working remotely in a corporate job during the pandemic, she decided she wanted something different.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was working online, and I just wasn\u2019t enjoying it at all. So I decided to leave that position,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Career consultant Lynda Barry says this reflects a wider trend. \u201cDuring covid, a lot of people were working from home, so it was just them and the job, and they really got a feel for parts that they did like or didn\u2019t like,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re trying to pivot out of a function that isn\u2019t what they want, and pivot towards another. That can come in the context of doing a little job here, a little job there, and ending up having a portfolio career.\u201d<\/p>\n

Niamh completed a course in Ballymaloe Cookery School, and put her skills to use by making picnic boxes during lockdown.<\/p>\n

This led to several other opportunities, culminating in Niamh founding her own food truck and drinks brand. She let the food truck go last year, and now splits her time between the estate agents and her kefir business, as well as running events and occasional yoga classes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no black and white with any of it, and I think that suits me as a person,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

DUCKS IN A ROW, EGGS IN MANY BASKETS<\/strong><\/p>\n

A portfolio career enables Niamh to run a business without putting all her financial eggs in one basket.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a future proof thing,\u201d she says. \u201cI always think, \u2018what if BKultured didn\u2019t survive, or what if Hegarty Properties didn\u2019t survive?\u2019 There\u2019s always something that could go wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

A portfolio career is not without its challenges. Freelancers have to deal with a lot of uncertainty.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do worry about anything that might stop me working for a period of time, like illness, and I know that nothing is guaranteed in terms of regular jobs and commissions,\u201d says Aoife.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really have to balance the precariousness of my job with the huge freedom it gives me, which isn\u2019t always easy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Financial security can be a worry. \u201cI\u2019m never not thinking about my finances,\u201d says Aoife.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy personal circumstances mean freelancing works for me, and I have a supportive partner who works in tech. But it\u2019s definitely not a viable career choice for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fionnuala Jones agrees that being on top of your finances is key. \u201cYou need to have your financial ducks in a row, because financially, if it\u2019s not going to work, it\u2019s going to put you under incredible stress long term,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

For anyone planning a family, the flexibility of a portfolio career must be offset against the instability.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019d like to have kids at some point. I know that\u2019s a question that\u2019s come up: what are you going to do when and if you do have children and maternity leave, how are you going to figure all that out? The honest answer is, I don\u2019t really know,\u201d says Fionnuala.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut if it doesn\u2019t work out, I can go back and get a job.\u201d There is a risk of burnout if people in portfolio careers don\u2019t look after their wellbeing. \u201cYou have to take time off, because otherwise, your body will decide for you when to take the time off,\u201d says Fionnuala. \u201c<\/p>\n

Niamh Hegarty describes the \u201cnever-ending to-do list\u201d that comes with a portfolio career. \u201cIt\u2019s challenging because you\u2019re juggling priorities and I think that\u2019s the biggest thing, because each role has a priority,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

This busy workload can mean personal life takes a backseat. \u201cJuggling a personal life and a work life is really tricky, because unfortunately, the work life usually takes priority,\u201d says Niamh.<\/p>\n

However, Aoife Barry believes that finding work\/life balance is essential. \u201cI don\u2019t buy into the \u2018you have to work all the time\u2019 mentality as a freelancer,\u201d says Aoife.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur work suffers if we push ourselves too much, and nothing is worth burnout.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freelancing can be a solitary career, and building a supportive network is key to longevity.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing that\u2019s been so helpful is having friends who are also freelancers who I can turn to for advice,\u201d says Aoife. \u201cIf you\u2019re freelance, finding pals in the same position can help you feel less alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

For anyone considering a portfolio career, Lynda Barry recommends research and planning to set yourself up for success: \u201cIt\u2019s about doing your research, doing your mapping around time and financials, mapping your own feasibility and making sure that the perception that you have gets as close to the reality as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
