Move from Garda Siochana to Health & Safety

Thursday, April 17, 2014

Q. I am 54 years of age, working in An Garda Siochana. I wish to change my career. I completed a diploma course at UCD 2005/07 in Health & Safety, an area I would like to work in but unable so far to get a start in this area. Can advise me as to how I can enter the workforce in the area of Health and Safety or further my chances by taking up an alternative Degree? – David

A. Health and Safety seem to be a growing area and there a huge amount of people who are freelancing or self-employed in this area.

Would you consider setting up a business as a consultant? You could simply register a business name.

You don't necessarily need to set up company and become a director although you could and then you could give yourself a job! Lots of organisations require health and safety statements especially some organisations which would find the procedure very expensive.

Would you consider doing some pro-bono work for a community or voluntary organisation to get some experience on your resume? This might help you to build up something that you could present to a prospective employer. Good luck.
