Q. I have only worked in two places both for 2 years each and all prospective employers point this out, can you show me a way to use it to my advantage? Plus both areas have been totally different than one another- one being fashion the other accountancy!! Niamh

A. If employers are pointing this out to you I guess you are getting called to interview stage. If this is the case you need to have your story right and be able to take positives from any work experiences and relate them to the role you are applying for.

It is possible to turn any work experience into a positive. In your case employers may be worried that you lack clarity about career direction – you must convince them that the role you are applying for is the route you want to take.

If you are not getting called for interview you need to address your CV. The key to CV success is focus. Let’s say you are targeting accountancy roles - you need to make this experience look a lot bigger on your CV. Provide more detail about your duties and responsibilities being aware of what the employer is seeking. You can reverse this for your fashion experience minimising the amount you write and try to focus on any relevant skills and competencies.

Another scenario - If your most recent experience is not relevant for the role you are targeting perhaps use a heading “relevant work experience” to enable you to get all your relevant experience on the first page of the CV.
