Salary Negotation

Q. I am a recent graduate (mature student) and have an interview as a PA to a hotel proprietor. I have a lot of administrative experience (over 25 years). The salary being offered is E23,000. I have seen in salary surveys that someone with my administrative experience should be in the 30,000 to 38,000 euro range. However, the advert looked for a graduate. My question is given the present economic climate am I in a position to negotiate on salary even on the basis of leave, pension, health insurance etc? Carmel

A. The current economic climate means in many industries the demand for jobs outweighs supply and many employers know that they can now recruit at lower salary levels than in the past.  During the interview don't bring up the salary issue at the outset, as it is always better to be offered the job first, then to discuss salary and other benefits.
