Quake hits Seattle and Oregon

A strong earthquake shook the northwest of America today, shattering windows in downtown Seattle and rattling Portland, Oregon.

There are no reported injuries.

The quake, estimated at a magnitude of 6.2, hit at approximately 10.50am local time, according to federal officials at the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska.

Seismologists at the University of Washington said the epicenter of the quake was 30 miles southwest of Seattle.

Some 17,000 people were left without electricity following the earthquake.
