Worst disaster in our history, says Walsh

The Minister for Agriculture Joe Walsh has warned that the foot and mouth epidemic is the single largest threat to the Republic since independence.

Minister Walsh has called for the support of the entire country in a desperate bid to prevent the virus from spreading here but stressed there were no signs of it in the country.

"There is not outbreak in this country. There have been no signs, no symptoms and no indications whatsoever of the disease here."

He added that the government were treating it as though the outbreak was already here and were even going beyond the measures taken in Britain where the disease has actually hit.
