Salary Guide 2017: Banking & Stockbroking

Tuesday, January 31, 2017

2016 remained a competitive year for financial services as the trend continued for the ongoing demand for highly skilled candidates.

Organisations remained competitive in efforts to attract, engage and retain skilled professionals.  Whilst there was a slight increase in salaries across financial services organisations, we have also seen organisations introduce more flexible ways to manage their attrition rates. Methods include introducing flexi time, part time positions, remote working, opening satellite offices as well as increasing overall benefits packages.

Commentary on Banking & Stockbroking Roles and Remuneration in Ireland for 2017

In Retail Banking, we have seen a strong demand for qualified candidates with the APA or QFA qualification, especially in the latter half of the year. In 2015/2016 we saw a demand in restructuring & arrears but we have seen significant increase in demand for financial advisors, new business underwriters, credit analysts and relationship managers. This continued to be the trend again within the last six months as demand for mortgages increased.  We anticipate the positive uplift in this area will continue into 2017.  Permanent opportunities were in high demand in retail banking in 2016 and candidates were receiving multiple offers and counter offers, which presented challenges for organisations.

Another noticeable trend is the rise of FinTech within the banking industry. Globalisation and technological advancements have brought about vast changes within the global banking arena, creating a promising atmosphere particularly in Dublin. It has been noted that over 85% of Irish banking customers are using mobile apps to complete their daily banking transactions and this is predicted to have a continuing negative impact on the demand for manual processing jobs within the Banking sector. There is general consensus that new tech competitors will look to compete with banks in transnational or payment systems space. The necessity of linking finance and technology is expected to have effects on job design and will likely be the focus for Irish banks in 2017.

There is still a lot of ambiguity around Brexit, but the trend looks set to be positive for Ireland with organisations from the UK hoping to relocate or open offices in the Dublin financial services district and consider other Irish locations.
