Commentary on IT Roles and Contract Rates in Ireland for 2017

Employers are looking for longer term options on projects as these tend to be far more cost effective than contract hires. Concurrently, job seekers themselves are pushing towards longer term deals as benefit packages associated with these roles having improved, with the likes of share options being significant factors in candidates’ decision making. This has turned heads for a number of “career” IT contractors due to the potential financial rewards.

However, there is still a skills shortage in software development resulting in a continued demand for IT contract professionals for the foreseeable future - especially if a permanent staff member hands in their notice or when a project release is due.

Within software development, the main technologies that are sought after by employers are people with either Full Stack, Java or .Net development skills. Companies are trying to hire more local talent, but due to the skills shortage, a number of candidates are being sourced from abroad. Companies are also starting to offer remote working opportunities, particularly for those based abroad, in order to attract the best talent available.

2017 should be an interesting year for IT contractors. Whilst the market is pushing towards permanent hires, a talent shortfall nationwide should open up a number of new opportunities for contractors.
