Position Description

Buildings Development Team, Group Property Strategy & Development within Engineering and Major Projects provides the full range of planning, design, construction and maintenance services required for electricity industry infrastructure projects in Ireland.

The Specialist Architect will be responsible for leading design teams and for the architectural inputs required to deliver projects across ESB to support the Net-Zero 2040 strategy, for both new developments and existing assets. They will be responsible for assuring that robust design solutions are prepared and will administer contracts to successful delivery. The role includes the provision of technical advice and support to ensure regulatory and legal compliance for the business in the development of new assets and continued operation of existing assets. The role also involves the mentoring and professional development of junior staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver enhanced economic and sustainable designs on construction projects as part of ESB’s NetZero 2040 Strategy and ensuring projects meet the required quality, are commercially acceptable and in line with key project success requirements.
  • Procure, appoint, lead, and manage multi-disciplinary teams in the delivery of all stages in life cycle of building projects,
  • Knowledge expert for advice to internal and external stakeholders on Irish building regulations/compliance and Health & Safety.
  • Provide strong leadership and direction in the development of Architectural Design & Building Compliance capability, and technical knowledge within the organisation.
  • Deliver the role of Project Supervisor Design Process on assigned projects and provide support and guidance to design and construction teams.
  • Possess expert contract administration knowledge and experience, including ability to successfully manage and mitigate project risks.
  • Provide strong Stakeholder Management by identifying, maintaining, and fostering strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders including partner organisations, statutory bodies, and local authorities, to facilitate project delivery.
  • Fully embrace the ESB Safety Culture across all activities by taking ownership and demonstrating visible commitment to safety.

Experience and Qualifications 

Essential

  • Minimum (+ 7 years) experience as a consultant architect, and a project portfolio demonstrating strong design skills.
  • Degree in Architecture or a related discipline, NFQ Level 8 or equivalent recognised qualification and Registered Architect status, in accordance with Section 18 (1) of the Building Control Act 2007.
  • Comprehensive understanding of relevant Irish regulations, legislation, policy and guidance.
  • Demonstrable experience in the successful delivery of large, complex architectural projects, including design team leadership, ability to meet deadlines, management of technical risks and a collaborative approach to problem solving.
  • Demonstrable experience in Contract Administration, and knowledge of the regulatory framework of Planning, Building Control and general regulations relevant to architectural and building projects.
  • Demonstrable competence and experience in safety management, including the role of Project Supervisor Design Phase.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and proven track record of managing internal and external stakeholders.

Desirable 

  • Proficiency in the use of AutoCAD and REVIT.
  • Proficiency in the BCMS platform with experienced understanding of the BC(A)R process.
  • A strong commercial and project management capability.

Location 

This position will be based in ESB E&MP’s Offices in Dublin or Cork but may require travel nationally in the course of general duties.

The successful candidate may work flexibly within their jurisdiction with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration on at least one anchor day per week. All smart working arrangements are subject to manager approval and ongoing review, based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the individual.

Salary

€71,000 to €84,000 per annum.
