Fisheries Control Specialist

About the Role
The SFPA is seeking an experienced and driven Fisheries Control Specialist (Higher Executive Officer Grade to play a national role in the development and delivery of Ireland’s national fisheries control system.
This is an important role within the Fisheries and Food Support Unit, with responsibility for supporting the SFPA in fulfilling its regulatory mandate under national, EU and international laws.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Represent the SFPA in national and EU forums to influence fisheries control policy and practices.
- Provide operational advice and support to port offices, ensuring uniform enforcement of fisheries legislation.
- Interpret and apply complex legislation, creating clear guidance and operational procedures.
- Develop national procedures, SOPs, and technical documentation to support regulatory consistency.
- Lead and deliver training programmes (induction, refresher, CPD) for Sea-Fisheries Protection Officers.
- Support the rollout of new laws, technologies, and policies through cross-functional projects.
- Engage with internal teams and external stakeholders to foster cooperation and awareness.
- Prepare high-quality publications such as Fisheries Information Notices and guidance materials.
Essential Requirements:
- A relevant third-level qualification (NFQ Level 7 or higher) in a subject such as Fisheries, Marine Science, Science, Law, Policy, Regulatory Affairs, or a related field.
- At least 3 years of relevant experience, ideally in a fisheries control or regulatory role. This could include work in areas like regulation implementation, compliance, monitoring, technical support, or management — especially with experience at an operational or national level.
- Strong ability to understand and interpret complex legislation, and to turn those legal requirements into clear, practical guidance or procedures.
- Experience in writing and delivering technical documents, regulatory guidelines, or training materials.
- Excellent written and spoken English, with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with both internal colleagues and external stakeholders.
