Staff Grade Medical Scientist – Microbiology

We are seeking a Medical Scientist to join a busy microbiology laboratory team in Limerick. This is a hands-on role where you’ll ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant running of the lab. You will work closely with clinical colleagues, support infection control, and play a key role in delivering accurate results to improve patient outcomes.

What You’ll Do

• Perform microbiological testing across a wide range of specimens
• Carry out antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) and report critical findings
• Operate and maintain systems such as Vitek 2 Compact, BacT/ALERT 3D, MALDI-TOF, and GeneXpert
• Maintain compliance with ISO 15189 standards and GLP
• Contribute to internal quality control, external quality assessments, and audits
• Support and train non-scientific staff in safe laboratory practices
• Collaborate with infection control and clinical teams to improve patient care

What We’re Looking For

• Minimum 2 years’ post-qualification experience in microbiology
• Knowledge of ISO 15189 and laboratory quality systems
• Experience with AST, molecular diagnostics, and LIS platforms
• Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
