Governed by The Company of Goldsmiths of Dublin, and established by Royal Charter in 1637, the Assay Office, assays and hallmarks (tests and certifies) items of gold, silver and platinum jewellery and or plate manufactured in Ireland or imported. In Ireland, all items of gold, silver and platinum are subject to compulsory assay and marking. The Assay Office protects standards through services to wholesalers, retailers and craftspeople. It provides: scientific testing in its laboratory; the skill of the “Markers” in its Marking Room and the essential support of the administration team to ensure a high level of consumer protection in a fair-trading environment
