CEO of Prosperity Recruitment on what sectors are hiring and why

With the world of work changing all the time, it can be hard to keep up on what sectors are hiring.

We spoke with Garry Mullan, CEO of recruitment agency Prosperity, to get a steer on who’s hiring, why a particular sector is hiring and the skills needed in those sectors.

Who’s hiring?

“There’s a lot of hiring at the moment, and it’s mainly in digital,” said Gary.

The following skills and training that will set a candidate apart in the digital world according to Gary are PPC, SEO, SEM, and to have a strong social media background; for example, understanding google analytics and the newer social media platforms such as TikTok and how advertising works on these kinds of platforms.

On the design side of things Gary says it’s very busy in terms of recruitment in the areas of UX, involving product marketing and analytics. “Anything to do with digital is very busy at the moment,” he said.

B2B and having an understanding of marketing automation, content marketing, and SEO is very much in demand at the moment too. “Companies are starting to look at how they do their own marketing now.”

Difference in salaries

There’s a considerable difference in salaries between multinational tech companies and small to medium enterprises, says Garry, “and this puts pressure on SMEs,” he continued.

Salaries are twenty to thirty percent more with tech firms and those packages are very attractive. Workers get great training and understanding of big, international projects. However, it can be very attractive for someone to go in and work closely with the management team and with decision-makers to create a lot of value for an SME.

“An ideal candidate would have two or three years in a media or creative agency or someone from an SME who has demonstrated that they’ve been very hands-on with projects. If they have multinational experience on top of that, that’s fantastic.”

According to Gary Ireland is dealing with candidates going into Google and working on big projects spurring people on to come up with projects of their own that Google can use:  “They’re thinking maybe I can set up my own startup. It’s great that multinationals are in Ireland because it gives candidates that global perspective and new ideas and that things can grow and can be done on a global scale.”

Recruitment and COVID

“It’s been the perfect storm in some ways. A lot of hiring came to a halt but the whole online and the digital world started moving at a faster pace, there was a huge digital transformation now there’s a huge demand for all this talent across tech and digital a lot of them are competing for the same staff,” Gary concluded.
