HMRC at University College Cork was established in 1979. It is a centre of excellence within Ireland for Ocean Renewables and Coastal Engineering providing support to the maritime industry as well as fundamental R&D. HMRC houses the only facilities for wave simulation in Ireland with a wave flume and an ocean wave basin.
The 30 staff at the HMRC have been selected from a wide range of engineering backgrounds; including civil, environmental, electrical and electronic, mechanical, aeronautical and oceanographic. This provides a diverse assortment of experience and skills to explore the multi disciplinary technology. Further growth is expected over the next few months, taking on a number of post-doctoral researchers, engineers and PhD students.

Contract duration: The present position is a 3 month contract with possible extension to 6 months, with a daily salary of €300-€350/day. The intention of the post is to kick-start a software development project using an experienced software engineer consultant. After six months, the project will be established enough to employ a full-time software engineer for the remainder of the 2 year project.
Project outline: This project seeks to develop and commercialise a software platform (NAVITAS) that will become the global standard to evaluate the commercial viability of marine renewable energy projects and to ultimately exploit it through a new Irish start-up company. The target is to create the Garrad Hassan equivalent for the marine energy industry.
The current version of NAVITAS is a prototype Excel spreadsheet tool developed by the Charles Parsons Fund under SFI. The primary objective of this project is to develop and commercialize the product as follows:
Technical outcomes:
1) A re-engineered robust NAVITAS product. The initial product produced will be ‘NAVITAS Lite’ for those wishing to sample the product or who are early-stage in their own projects.
2) A fully developed version of NAVITAS called ‘NAVITAS Enterprise’ which will contain a suite of 12 integrated modules.
Experience: 2:2 Degree or higher in Software Engineering or Computer Science. Masters or PhD an advantage. Minimum 3-4 years commercial Microsoft Windows development experience using Microsoft .Net, preferably using C# but VB also considered. Full software development lifecycle experience including design, documentation, implementation, unit testing and Q/A. Unit testing on the .Net platform and a commitment to Test Driven Development. Database design, Microsoft SQL Server administration and SQL skills essential. Good understanding of Object Oriented Design essential. Experience of agile methodologies such as Scrum is an advantage. Experience in optimisation an advantage. Experience of renewable energy generation is an advantage. Ability to mentor less experienced member(s) of the team. Research experience is an advantage Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project Good administrative skills including document control, and fault log and tracking. Ability to communicate technical information to nontechnical audiences Ability to manage work packages to deliver high quality results in a timely manner.
