Job Outline: To lead, manage and develop the Institute education programme with the aim of maintaining and enhancing the Institute’s reputation as a leader in accountancy education. The key areas of responsibility cover
  • Developing and implementing of education policies and procedures and advising on the development of same;
  • Course planning and delivery;
  • Management of the Lecturing team;
  • Developing course material;
  • Leading the Education Division and managing the relations with stakeholders (including lecturing teams, training firms and students):
  • Managing customer service and quality processes in order to ensure a strong customer centric culture with continuous improvement in these services to meet/exceed customer expectations.
Reporting to: Director of Education and Training

Specific responsibilities:
Overall responsibilities may vary from time to time, but can be sub-divided into the identified responsibilities, as follows:

Education Policies and Procedures :

  • Developing, updating, reviewing and communicating education policies, procedures, regulations in line with guidance from Education Board;
  • Researching comparative practices of other professional bodies and advising on same;
  • Undertaking periodic reviews of the education programme and related research to inform developments of the education programme as required;
  • Managing and overseeing the operation of these procedures;
  • Maintaining the Institute reputation in our dealings with Regulators.
Course Planning and Delivery

  • Managing and oversight of the course planning process and to ensure that changes to same are agreed with stakeholders in a timely manner and which are proactively managed to respond to issues arising;
  • Determining the appropriate mix of offerings for each class in conjunction with lecturers including evening, streaming and block formats;
  • Agreeing the necessary planning programme and to disseminate this to the lecturing team;
  • Monitoring the running of the programme (including any agreed QA framework measures) and to take appropriate actions to address any issues arising;
  • Managing the development of appropriate innovations supported by the undertaking of periodic programme reviews to identify areas to enhance the education programme.
Lecturer Management :

  • Managing the lecturer selection process with the aim of having an excellent team in place;
  • Monitoring on an on-going basis the performance of lecturers;
  • Ensuring that appropriate lecturer supports and training are in place on an on-going basis;
  • Arranging appropriate initial lecturer development and additional interventions as needed from time to time as well as periodic training;
  • Gathering appropriate feedback from stakeholders on the performance of lecturers and to proactively manage the results of this process to enhance the education programme.
Course Material Development :

  • Agreeing course material specifications with authors and the management of the delivery of same in a timely manner with the aim of having excellent consistent course materials to support the programme
  • Managing appropriate quality processes over course material development and distribution
  • Providing appropriate specification of requirements to the publishing team to ensure appropriate publications are in place and to manage the interface with the publishing team as needed;
  • Managing and overseeing the distribution of materials to students in a timely manner (physical and website);
  • Researching alternative ways of delivering materials and to oversee the development of same.
Head of Division :

  • Manage the key relationships with all key stakeholders (Lecturers, firms, authors, students) in a proactive manner;
  • Contributing to the strategic direction and imperatives of the Education area in line with Institute strategic plan and policy decisions;
  • Leading the Education Team, including day-to-day operational management of Admissions Unit including staff management and appraisals;
  • Managing the examiner lecturer interface through timely coordination meetings;
  • Ensuring the effective and efficient operation of the Education Team, through the departmental budgeting and accounting processes and IT systems;
  • Working collaboratively with other Institute Departments, and building relationships with key external stakeholders (training firms, student societies), Educators, Course Leaders etc.

Customer Service and Quality Processes :

  • Ensuring an appropriate customer service environment is in place at all times including customer feedback processes and reporting;
  • Achieving team targets relating to customer service etc.;
  • Overseeing the on-going quality processes and ensuring that these are effectively operated in line with Institute policy with the aim to improve standards over time.
  • As the Institute is an all-island body, with education centres around the island there will be an element of travel from time to time.
Person Specification:

This is a senior position within the Institute – Head of Division - which requires an individual who can establish proactive and trusting relationships with colleagues and sub-contractors, Committees, firms and students based upon credible experience and expertise. As a result, candidates should ideally be qualified Chartered Accountants and/or hold a relevant post graduate qualification with relevant education experience in a leadership role.

Candidates should be committed to contributing fully to a team of professionals at the very centre of development of the accountancy education in Ireland.

A sound knowledge of the work of accountancy education over a number of years is essential. Excellent organisational, communication and influencing skills are required, and candidates should have a track record of team management leadership.

The role requires an ability to oversee and effectively delegate operations to the department team. A consistent focus on meeting and managing customer service expectations is essential.

Experience of managing change would be a distinct advantage. The position will interest those who enjoy the challenge of change. The Institute is the premier accounting body in Ireland, and is embracing an agenda for change centred on being the leader in accountancy education.
