The Health Research Board (HRB) is Ireland’s national agency responsible for supporting and funding high-quality health research, generating health information, and promoting the use of evidence in policy and practice with the aim of making a real difference to people’s lives. As a statutory agency under the Department of Health, the HRB operates under four business areas: Research Strategy and Funding Directorate; Health Information and Evidence Directorate; the National Office for Research Ethics and Regulations; and Corporate Operations Directorate; each contributing to the organisation’s mission to improve people’s health, promote evidence-informed patient care and create solutions to societal challenges.

The HRB wishes to appoint a Business Lead of the National Health Information Systems unit (NHIS), operating under the Health Information and Evidence Directorate. The NHIS collects and provides high-quality national data to policy-makers and service providers in the areas of disability, alcohol and drugs, and mental health - reporting at national, EU and international levels.

The Business Lead is a member of the HRB Management Team and will provide support and advice to the Director of Health Information and Evidence in relation to the ongoing development of the HRB’s role in national health information systems, to implement and manage the policies approved by the Executive Team and to improve continuously the performance of the HRB in the health information area.

Key Duties and Responsibilities will include:

  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality accurate data to inform national health policy and practice;
  • Provide advice and support to the Director and NHIS team on best international practice and strategy formulation for national health information systems;
  • Inspire and lead a highly skilled results focused team;
  • Lead the implementation of the HRB’s strategic business plan across the disability, alcohol and drugs, and mental health information systems;
  • Ensure compliance with all legislative requirements and best international practice in relation to the health information systems;
  • Promote Ireland’s position as a key partner with national, EU and international stakeholders, highlighting the value of the HRB’s national health information systems;
  • Identify opportunities to improve health information through new initiatives in disability, alcohol and drugs, and mental health.

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrable track record of health information systems and experience of leading a highly skilled results focused team. This is a key management role and offers an appropriately qualified candidate an opportunity to play a significant role in informing national health policy and practice, working with key national, EU and international partners, and make a real difference to people’s health and social care and societal challenges for future generations.
