Independent Public Interest Directors
The Press Council of Ireland seeks to appoint two members of the public as independent directors.
The Press Council is an independent self-regulatory body which upholds the freedom of the press, promotes high ethical and professional standards in Irish journalism, and provides an independent forum for resolving complaints by members of the public against the press.
The Board
The Board of the Press Council is responsible for oversight of the organization and for considering appeals against decisions of the Press Ombudsman. It has thirteen directors, seven of whom are independent public interest directors. The other six represent different sectors of press industry.
The Board meets monthly for three hours (except in January and August), with additional meetings as required. Meetings take place at our Dublin city centre offices, with the possibility of online participation. Directors are expected to read a range of documents in preparation for meetings.
Criteria
Applicants should have an interest in public affairs and the press, and experience in the public, private or voluntary sectors. They are asked to identify any potential conflicts of interest, including having a working background in journalism.
The Press Council of Ireland is committed to building a diverse and inclusive Board of Directors and encourages applicants from candidates of all backgrounds, identities and experiences.
Directors are appointed for a term of three years, renewable once. They are remunerated at a rate of €5,000 per annum.
A letter of application and CV should be sent to Rory Montgomery, Chairperson of the Press Council (chairperson@presscouncil.ie), by 5pm on February 13th.
Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by an independent Appointments Committee.
