Advisory Counsel (Grade III)

Office of the Attorney General

The Attorney General is the advisor to the Government in matters of law and legal opinion and provides the State with drafting and legislative services.

 Reporting to the Advisory Counsel (Grade I), the Advisory Counsel (Grade III) will assist and advise the Attorney General in carrying out his functions. The role involves specialist advisory work in the fields of domestic, European and International law, participation in the formulation of legislation and legal policy, representing the State in international fora and advising on the conduct of litigation in which the State is involved. Those appointed may also be required to give legal advice to Government Departments and Offices. 

 Advisory Counsel will be required to be available for secondment for periods of time to other Government Departments or Offices.

 Candidates must be called to the Bar of Ireland and be enrolled as a Barrister in the State or have been admitted and be enrolled as a Solicitor in the State and have significant practising experience in the State including advocacy in a court setting. In addition, they must have an ability to analyse complex issues and excellent writing skills.

 A panel will be formed from which future vacancies may be filled.
