Position Overview:   To provide general news reporting, from our Cork newsroom and elsewhere in Ireland as assigned by the News Editor.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Functioning as a key member of the Newsroom reporting team, both in the newsroom and out on assignment. 
  • Carrying out a broad range of reporting tasks in the Cork newsroom.
  • Pitching story ideas on a regular basis to the News Editor and following through and delivering these stories under the direction of the News Editor. 
  • Working in an accurate, fast and efficient manner to tight deadlines dictated by digital publishing demands. 
  • Filing stories to the content management system via agreed processes and ensuring stories fulfil the digital/mobile-first strategy. 
  • Providing in-depth analysis of news events and current affairs. 
  • Producing ideas and suggestions for stories to be pursued by yourself or others, individually or as part of a reporting team. 
  • Working in collaboration with the Visual Media and Audio departments and other departments as required. 
  • Using social media to promote and develop stories while adhering to the company’s social media policy. 

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • A degree in journalism, communications, or a related field is desirable, but not mandatory.
  • Demonstrable experience in news reporting, with a strong track record of delivering accurate and engaging content under tight deadlines.
  • Familiarity with multimedia storytelling, including collaboration with visual and audio media teams, and the ability to adapt content for digital platforms.
  • Proficiency in digital publishing tools and content management systems, with a clear understanding of digital and mobile first strategies.
  • Experience using social media platforms to source, develop, and promote stories while maintaining professional standards and adherence to organisational policies.
  • Strong ability to analyse and contextualise current affairs, providing in-depth and insightful reporting.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team, contributing ideas and supporting colleagues to achieve shared goals.
  • A well-maintained contacts book and the ability to cultivate and sustain relationships with sources across a range of sectors.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to represent the Irish Examiner/The Echo in public and broadcast settings if required.
  • A flexible approach to work, including the ability to adapt to new technologies, changing newsroom priorities, and dynamic reporting demands.
