The Company

The Irish Times Group is Ireland’s leading independent quality news and information publishing organisation. The core activity of The Irish Times Group has evolved from six-day print publishing to a seven-day multi-platform news publisher with a market-leading position in the development of subscriptions. We focus on producing quality journalism and information for our users under the principles of The Irish Times. As well as our B2C subscriptions business we provide (B2B) advertising, sponsorship and media solutions for customers as we continue to evolve in a fast-changing media landscape.

The company is owned by The Irish Times Trust and is managed by The Irish Times DAC. In recent years, The Irish Times Group has expanded its interests to include the Irish Examiner, The Echo, regional newspapers, in addition to the Citywest print facility, RecruitIreland.com, MyHome.ie, RIP.ie, The Gloss and Score Beo.

The Role

Product Manager (Publishing) is a new role, at the intersection of journalism and technology. The successful candidate will be responsible for the tools that make stories happen: content management systems, excellent graphics and data journalism platforms, the best video and audio tools, smarter workflows and editorial scheduling tools.

We are seeking an innovative Product Manager (Publishing) with a full understanding of story creation, editorial production, and editor and reporter needs. They will lead the co-creation of a shared vision for the systems that enable and enhance the creation of our premium journalism.

The Product Manager (Publishing) will form business relationships with international publishers and industry bodies, and have opportunities for projects with third parties.

They will work closely with editors and journalists across the Irish Times, Irish Examiner and The Echo.

The role also involves close collaboration with two other product managers: the Product Manager (Apps), responsible for showcasing the content we create; and the Product Manager (Commercial), who enables subscriber acquisition and retention. These three product lines align with the three main aspects of our business – creating flexible premium content, showcasing that content to build user engagement, and converting that engagement into customer relationships.

A critical component of this role is the ability to build trust and foster strong relationships with key stakeholders across editorial, commercial, data and technology teams through early engagement, effective communication and strong creative leadership.

The Product Manager (Publishing) will report directly to the Group Chief Information Officer with dotted line reporting to the Editor of The Irish Times.

 Key Responsibilities

  •  Lead the co-creation and evolution of a vision for our digital journalism platforms that enable content creation and publication. This will include secure content management systems, content creation tools for text, audio and video, and AI supports for journalists.
  • Ensure that our publishing systems and products support the right mix of speed, accuracy, scale and critically trust (from both journalists and users).
  • Manage the lifecycle of these products: discovery, data analysis, design, delivery, adoption, and ongoing measurement of impact.
  • Keep abreast of emerging digital trends in content creation, publishing and other information-based industries. This will include direct contact with other publishers, and participation in relevant bodies, forums and conferences.
  • Work with editorial teams to design workflows that showcase premium journalism in multiple formats.
  • Work with the other product managers to co-create a three-stage system: effective editorial tools; an excellent experience for readers/viewers/listeners; and strong customer and revenue relationships.
  • Work with the analytics and Insights team to ensure there is an evidence basis for changes or new features, and to measure their impact.
  • Work with the UX design team to uphold the principle of user-centric design.
  • Work with the engineering team to select and prioritise work.
  • Work with finance to ensure a viable return on investment – for example by improving the efficiency of content creation or growing user engagement.
  • Work with the security and data architecture teams to ensure our publishing systems meet compliance and security standards.

 Key Requirements & Experience

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A track record in journalism, publishing or other digital media field.

  • Understanding of how to leverage innovation and agile development.
  • Strong communication, lateral leadership and influencing skills – especially the confidence to make and explain prioritisation decisions.
  • A strong customer focus and commitment to user-centric design.
  • An ability to lead the co-creation of a future vision.
  • An understanding of the threats and opportunities from data and technology trends in publishing (such as AI and the evolution of search).
