Senior Scientist - Process Development (Biopharma)
1. General Information:
Job Title: Senior Scientist (Level 3)
Department: Process Development
Position Reports to: Principal Scientist (Level 4 Manager), Process Development
2 . Job Purpose:
To provide science and technology expertise and leadership in the field of conjugation chemistry and macromolecule purification science for the development and optimisation of vaccine manufacturing processes.
3. Job Responsibilities:
Our clients vaccine technology portfolio comprises multiple approaches for the creation of effective vaccines. Core to these technologies are chemical conjugation steps whereby immunogenic molecules such as polysaccharides are covalently linked to other carrier/adjuvant molecules. This laboratory-based role will focus on the characterization of these steps (e.g., aspects of kinetics and process control) and the subsequent improvement of these processes for existent vaccines in commercial manufacturing, and those vaccines in the later stages of development programs.
Candidate will;
• Design, execute and coordinate experimental studies for the development of vaccine manufacturing processes. Initial focus will concentrate on the characterization and optimization of process steps for the chemical conjugation of polysaccharides and peptides to other carrier/adjuvant molecules.
• Collaborate closely with analytical scientists who will work on the characterization of these macromolecules during these process development studies.
• Work with team in the design and optimization of purification steps for glycoconjugates or other macromolecular vaccines using technologies such as filtration (normal/tangential flow), chromatography, etc.
• Provide technical subject matter expertise to Drug Substance Technical Services when required during investigations, new process introduction or change implementation in commercial manufacturing operations. Technical support may involve trouble-shooting manufacturing-scale process problems through experimental investigations at laboratory scales of operation.
• Represent the Process Development team in chosen technical field at inter-company project meetings, project meetings with third party partners and other forums.
4 Education/Experience:
• Ph.D in organic chemistry or related discipline in the chemical sciences with minimum of 3 – 5 years relevant experience in the pharmaceutical industry
or
M.Eng/MSc with 7-10+ years of directly relevant experience.
• Technical fields of experience preferably to include aspects of organic synthesis, chemical reaction engineering and chemical process scale-up. Knowledge and practical experience of biomolecule chemistry and bioprocessing an advantage.
• Experience in designing, executing and directing components of experimental programs in the laboratory.
• Proficient user of problem-solving, risk analysis and statistical tools.
• Familiar with drug regulations/regulatory processes and quality/GMP/compliance systems of the pharmaceutical industry.
Behavioural
• A team player by preference.
• Consultative, but with an action bias to drive closure when timelines dictate.
• A technical expert in field.
• Highly motivated.
• Excellent communication skills (verbal, written).
• Ability to matrix-work effortlessly across team and organizational/hierarchical boundaries.
