Lab Manager - Permanent - Cork

The Central Lab Manager will work closely with the Head of Quality and the Site QA teams to ensure that accurate test results are delivered in a timely manner using approved testing methods. Where possible test standards/controls should be run in parallel for each test. The Central Lab Manager will have significant people management responsibility and will be a core part of the Quality team, liaising directly with both internal and external parties on all associated aspects of the business.

Responsibilities:
  • Administration of Lab Operations, documentation systems and purchasing consumables;
  • Supervise work performed in Labs in micro and chemistry, including monitoring daily output of results and ensuring deadlines are met;
  • Responsible for a team of 17 lab technicians ensuring that all staffing issues are resolved and appropriate training is provided to equip employees to drive overall lab performance and ensure accurate results are issued;
  • Ensuring that SOPs are developed and updated as required;
  • Organise staff rostering for temporary and permanent employees
  • Ensure Lab work is within assigned budget payroll and consumables
  • Drive a safety culture within Central lab, promoting adherence to all Health and Safety procedures;
  • Conduct Health and Safety Meetings and Safety Audits and completion of CRMS tasks;
  • Validation of equipment and test methods;
  • Instrument calibration
  • Review outcomes from external proficiency schemes;
  • Drive continuous improvement and/or cost reduction initiatives within the lab quality system and ensure adherence to the Lab Accreditation Standard;
  • Maintain and update lab computer system;
  • Represent the lab during consumer audits;
  • Working with the Head of Quality and the Central Lab team to develop an ever-ready audit status for all lab audits;
  • Investigate any service issues/result deviations and implement solutions as required;
  • Responsible for the completion of weekly payroll for employees within Central Lab using the Core system;
  • Auditing of systems for compliance with standards;
  • Developing budget for Central Lab and ensures the area operates within budget;
  • Interfacing with Site Quality Managers re testing plans and prioritisation;
  • Implementing testing system to meet unanticipated testing requirements;
  • Sending samples to third party testing facilities to meet requirements; of processing sites
  • Monitor, deliver and report against key performance indicators on a weekly basis.


Knowledge, Skills & Competencies Required;
  • Third level degree level qualification (Min 2.1) in a science discipline;
  • 3 -5 years' experience in a similar role;
  • Proven working relationship with people;
  • Excellent people management skills;
  • Experience in internal Auditing;
  • Confident and optimistic with positive energy and drive to meet targets and achieve results;
  • Self motivated, with a "can do" attitude;
  • Good Communicator and Good Listener;
  • Strong business acumen and commercially aware;
  • Analytical and Problem solving skills to resolve issues in a timely manner;
  • Willingness to work effectively in a team environment and to adapt to challenges in the course of achieving objectives;
  • Open to change and thinking outside the box;
  • Be able to motivate people and demonstrate strong leadership skills;
  • Be able to deal with ambiguity and display resilience;
